Is remote computer help safe? How to get help without getting scammed
Remote support can fix most computer problems in minutes. Here’s how it works when it’s legitimate, and the warning signs of a scam.

Remote computer help lets a technician see your screen and fix problems over the internet, with no drive, no drop-off and often no waiting. It’s how many viruses, slow computers, printer problems and software errors get fixed today. But scammers use the same tools, so it’s fair to ask: is remote help safe?
The answer: yes, when you start it, with someone you chose and trust.
How legitimate remote help works
- You make the call. You contact a technician you know, by phone number you looked up yourself.
- You choose to connect. Only after talking it through are you guided through a temporary connection, and you approve it on your screen.
- You can watch everything. The work happens on your screen, where you can see it and ask questions.
- You end it. You can close the session at any time, and the connection doesn’t stay open afterward.
That’s exactly how remote help at Mark’s Computer Repair works.
Warning signs of a tech support scam
- They contacted you first: an unexpected phone call, email or text saying your computer has a problem.
- A pop-up says to call a number: real virus warnings don’t ask you to call anyone. Close the browser instead.
- Pressure and urgency: “Your bank account is at risk, act now!”
- They want payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency.
- They ask you to log in to your bank while they’re connected.
If you think you’ve been scammed
- Disconnect from the internet right away.
- Don’t let them reconnect, and hang up if they call back.
- Call your bank if you shared any financial information.
- Change your passwords from a different, safe device.
- Have a trusted technician check the computer for anything they left behind.
