The project
I worked as a field engineer on SunTrust’s upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, part of a nationwide effort to move every system to the newer, supported operating system with a seamless migration for each user.
It was my second major project for SunTrust, following the earlier Windows XP to Windows 7 migration and network upgrade across the Southeast.
Why upgrade
As Windows 7 neared the end of its support, staying on it would have meant no more security updates, which is a serious risk for a bank. Windows 10 brought better security, performance and support for modern software.
What a Windows migration involves
- Upgrading each computer to Windows 10, or setting up a new machine with it.
- Carrying over users’ files, settings and the programs they need.
- Testing that everything works, including network access, printers and line-of-business software.
- Supporting users on their first day so they can get straight back to work.
Where and how
My part of the project was in South Florida, as part of Compucom’s deployment services, and it included network upgrade work alongside the Windows 10 migrations.
How I work on projects like this
- On time, every time: clients count on my timeliness and dependability, especially when the schedule is tight.
- Built for live environments: I work around production so people can keep doing their jobs while their equipment is upgraded.
- Direct communication: I keep the client and their staff updated from start to finish.
- Strong troubleshooting: experience across every phase of computer systems means problems get solved on the spot instead of holding up the schedule.
