Hardware refresh
Cummins Meritor laptop and desktop update
Deploying new laptops and desktops for Cummins Meritor across multiple sites, with as little disruption to the business as possible.
The project
Cummins Meritor needed new laptops and desktops in the hands of its people at multiple sites. I worked as a field engineer on the deployment, helping streamline the upgrade so each location moved to its new equipment smoothly.
Meritor builds drivetrain, axle and brake systems for commercial vehicles and is now part of Cummins, so its locations are busy, working operations where computers have to keep running.
What a multi-site deployment involves
Rolling out new computers across several locations is as much about planning and coordination as it is about hardware. On a deployment like this, the field engineer’s job is to:
- Set up and deploy new laptops and desktops at each site, ready for users to log in and work.
- Move users over from their old machines with as little interruption as possible.
- Check that everything works, from network connections to printers and the programs each person relies on.
- Keep each site on schedule so the rollout stays consistent from one location to the next.
The team
The rollout was coordinated with Peak Systems project management, delivering IT support and technology installation for a manufacturer that couldn’t afford long interruptions.
How I work on projects like this
- On time, every time: clients count on my timeliness and dependability, especially when the schedule is tight.
- Built for live environments: I work around production so people can keep doing their jobs while their equipment is upgraded.
- Direct communication: I keep the client and their staff updated from start to finish.
- Strong troubleshooting: experience across every phase of computer systems means problems get solved on the spot instead of holding up the schedule.
