Before IT: event operations
Event operations at TPC Monte Carlo
Before computers were my full-time trade, I spent time helping host tournaments at TPC Monte Carlo — running the first tee, the driving range and club storage, and keeping the golf carts ready to go, always with personal service and a warm smile.
A memorable chapter
Long before I was crawling under desks and racking servers, I helped host three Q-School qualifying tournaments and three Senior PGA Tour events at TPC Monte Carlo. My job was to keep things running smoothly on the ground: staging the first tee, managing the driving range and club storage, and maintaining the fleet of golf carts so players and guests always had what they needed, when they needed it.
It was demanding, detail-driven work in a live, high-pressure environment — not so different from the field engineering I do today — and it taught me early on how much preparation, timeliness and a genuine welcome matter when people are counting on you.
Thank you to everyone who made it special
None of it would have been possible, or nearly as much fun, without the people I worked alongside. I owe a lot of thanks to:
- My brother Rick — who got me the job there in the first place.
- My cousin Mark — who worked right alongside me.
- Charlie — our supervisor, who kept us all on track.
- Mike and Donny — great crew to work with every day.
- Mr. Renick — head of operations.
- Jack, Rob, John — and the rest of the staff who made every shift better.
Faces you don’t forget
Working at a club like that, you cross paths with some unforgettable people. A few moments have stuck with me ever since:
Had the privilege of meeting Mr. Palmer, who was kind enough to take me up in his helicopter.
Met Mr. Langer, who kept a residence at the club.
Rocco was a familiar, friendly face around the grounds.
